The Problem
A lot of people come in saying something like: “My back hurts every time I bend forward.”It might show up when tying shoes, picking something up, or leaning over the sink. Sometimes it’s a sharp pinch. Other times, it just feels stiff and tight. Lower back pain during bending is extremely common.
Why It Happens. Usually, a few things are going on:
• The hips and hamstrings are tight
• The lower back starts doing too much work
• The spine moves more than the hips do
When the hips stop contributing to the movement, the lower back takes on more stress than it should. Over time, that can lead to irritation and pain
Quick Tip: Try this simple movement:
Stand tall and place your hands on your hips. Now hinge forward by pushing your hips backward instead of rounding your back. Think “hips back, chest forward.” This helps shift the work away from the lower back.
When Massage Helps
Massage can help loosen the hips, hamstrings, and lower back muscles that restrict bending. When those areas start moving better, the lower back usually doesn’t feel like it’s doing all the work. If bending forward keeps bothering your back, it may be worth getting it checked out.
