The Problem
Some people feel a sharp or stiff pain in their lower back right when they stand up.
It often happens after sitting for a while or getting out of bed. The back feels locked up for a few seconds before it loosens.
This is something I see a lot in the clinic.
Why It Happens
Usually a few things are going on:
• Tight hips from sitting
• Stiff joints in the lower back
• Weak or sleepy glutes
When you stand, the back has to suddenly take the load.
Quick Tip
Before standing up, try this:
Sit tall and gently tighten your core and glutes for a few seconds.
Then stand up slowly instead of popping up quickly.
When Massage Helps
Massage can help loosen the hips, glutes, and lower back muscles that create that “stuck” feeling.
When those areas move better, standing up usually becomes much easier.
If it keeps happening, it may be worth getting it looked at.
