The Problem

A lot of people come in saying the same thing:
“My neck feels tight all the time.”

Often it shows up after spending hours looking down at a phone, laptop, or tablet. The neck feels stiff, the shoulders creep up, and sometimes the pain even spreads into the upper back or between the shoulder blades.

This is extremely common now.

Why It Happens

Usually a few things are going on:

• Your head stays tilted forward for long periods
• The upper traps and neck muscles start doing too much work
• The upper back stops moving the way it should

Your head weighs more than you think. When it stays forward all day, the neck muscles pay the price.

Quick Tip

Try this simple reset during the day:

Pull your chin straight back (like you’re making a double chin) and hold it for about 5 seconds.

Do this 5–10 times every hour or two.

It helps bring the head back over the shoulders.

When Massage Helps

Massage can help loosen the neck, upper traps, and upper back muscles that get overloaded from looking down.

When those areas relax, people usually notice their neck moves easier and the tension headaches calm down.

If your neck keeps tightening up, it may be worth getting it checked out.
