Shoulder Pain When Lifting Your Arm

If your shoulder hurts when you lift your arm, you’re not alone. I see this pretty often with people who lift weights, play sports, or sit at a desk most of the day.

Most of the time the problem isn’t the shoulder joint itself. It’s usually tight or irritated muscles around the shoulder that aren’t working well together.

A few common reasons this happens:

Rotator cuff irritation from overuse or repetitive movements
Tight chest muscles pulling the shoulders forward
Poor shoulder blade movement when the arm lifts overhead

When that combination shows up, the shoulder joint doesn’t move as smoothly and pain can start to develop.

A quick thing to try

Try a simple chest stretch in a doorway for about 20–30 seconds. Opening up the chest can help the shoulder sit in a better position and sometimes takes pressure off the rotator cuff.

When massage can help

Sports and orthopedic massage can help loosen the muscles around the shoulder and improve how the shoulder blade moves. When those muscles relax and start working better, lifting your arm usually becomes easier and less painful.

If shoulder pain has been sticking around for a few weeks, it may be worth getting it checked out. Treatment can often help resolve the issue before it becomes something more stubborn.
