The Problem
A lot of lifters come in saying:“My shoulder hurts when I bench press.”Sometimes the pain is in the front of the shoulder. Sometimes it shows up during the press or later that day. Bench pressing places significant stress on the shoulder joint. If things aren’t moving well, the shoulder will let you know.
Why It Happens. Usually, a few things are going on:
• The chest muscles get tight
• The shoulder joint stops moving smoothly
• The upper back isn’t supporting the lift well.
When the shoulder loses mobility or stability, the front of the joint often becomes irritated during pressing movements.
Quick Tip before pressing, try this: Pull your shoulder blades down and back. Think about keeping your chest tall and your shoulders packed during the lift. This gives the shoulder joint more support.
When Massage Helps:
Massage can help loosen the chest, shoulders, and upper back, allowing the shoulder to move more freely. When those tissues relax, pressing movements often feel smoother and less painful. If bench pressing keeps bothering your shoulder, it may be worth getting it checked out
